About

In the mid-1980s, Shorter Community AME Church recognized the need to provide affordable housing for seniors and individuals with disabilities. Under the leadership of Rev. J. Langston Boyd, pastor at the time, a task force was formed to explore options. After extensive deliberation and negotiations with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Allen Gardens was dedicated in November 1986. Construction was completed, and the first residents moved in by 1990.

Driven by a deep sense of responsibility to care for those who have labored in God’s vineyard, Shorter Community AME Church opened Allen Gardens to provide affordable, supportive housing. With 50 one-bedroom apartments, it quickly became a welcoming community where seniors live comfortably and with dignity.

The proximity to Shorter Church allows residents to attend 10:00 AM worship services without the challenges of finding transportation. Moreover, the seniors’ presence enriches the church community, offering wisdom and life experience that benefits the younger generations.

Allen Gardens is a HUD Senior Housing Project 202, located on a serene 1.4-acre site, dedicated to fostering a vibrant, caring community for seniors and individuals with disabilities.
